Is Home Working Causing Neck Discomfort?

November 17, 2020

During lock down you may have spent more time on a computer with less movement around an office due to being at home.  Neck conditions in the discs are similar to those of the back but are caused more by staying in the same position for longer periods i.e. working constantly at a computer and repetitive movements.  Symptoms you may be suffering from can include:

• Severe neck and arm pain

• Neurological symptoms of pins and needles and numbness with weakness in the arms and hands

• Weakness in the upper limbs

• In cases where the spinal cord is compressed or under pressure patients may feel similar symptoms in both arms and/or both legs with difficulty controlling their balance

• Loss of co-ordination in the hands ie inability to perform small tasks such as writing or doing up buttons very difficult

If lifestyle changes such as walking and keeping active does not improve your symptoms and they persist or you have sudden onset pain after an event you should seek a specialist opinion to get a diagnosis. Mr Sepahi, Consultant Spinal Neurosurgeon, has many years’ experience and will discuss with you the right pathway and treatment for your specific case. Treatments can include physiotherapy, nerve root injection, surgery or a combination of all three depending on your diagnosis.  A formal assessment and diagnosis is required before undertaking any treatment. Treatment without diagnosis can lead to further damage and must be only carried out following professional review.

If you have any of the above symptoms and would like an appointment with Mr Sepahi, for investigation and treatment please call our enquiry team on 01256 315010.
