Why is Bone Health Important?

1 in 2 women and 1 in 5 men will have a fragility fracture. This is a broken bone after a fall from a standing height or less. Commonly affected bones are the wrist, spine and hip. Low bone density (osteoporosis and osteopenia) can increase the risk of fragility fracture, but both of these conditions are silent: they only cause pain once a bone has broken.

Dr Wendy Holden, Consultant Rheumatologist, offers a specialist bone health service which has a state-of-the-art bone densitometry scanner (DEXA) which can identify low bone density as well as silent vertebral fractures in people who have lost height. DEXA scanning is fast and painless.
