Mr Ian Ambrose

Mr Ambrose is the Glaucoma lead consultant for Hampshire Hospitals and has his regular NHS glaucoma service based at the Royal Hampshire County Hospital in Winchester. Mr Ambrose read medicine at the University of Cambridge where he was awarded an exhibition scholarship and graduated in 2009 and following this undertook subspecialist training in Ophthalmology in the Wessex region. Mr Ambrose set up a highly successful virtual glaucoma service when a consultant in Ashford and St Peters, which was the first of its kind in Surrey and successfully eliminated the extended waiting time for glaucoma appointments.

Mr Ambrose regularly trains the next generation of surgeons both in cataract surgery and glaucoma surgery and as an excellent low complication rate well below the nationally expected standard of consultant ophthalmic surgeons. He is particularly interested in the latest technology of intraocular lens design and has a passion for ensuring the best outcomes for his patients, often that does not mean the most expensive lens implant and is very much different for different patients – it is this individualised approach which is most important.

Mr Ambrose’s skills include complex procedures such as aqueous shunt devices and trabeculectomy but also to micro-invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) such as iStent and OMNI which can help control glaucoma when performed alongside a cataract procedure.

As a current NHS consultant for HHFT Mr Ambrose will have access to all of your previous glaucoma records and can ensure continuity of care with any NHS treatment at HHFT.

As well as being a subspecialty lead and very experience in complex cataract surgery, Mr Ambrose has a very strong background in general ophthalmology and is able to help with most ophthalmic complaints.
