Why is Bone Health Important?
1 in 2 women and 1 in 5 men will have a fragility fracture. This is a broken bone after a fall from a standing height or less. Commonly affected bones are the wrist, spine and hip. Low bone density (osteoporosis and osteopenia) can increase the risk of fragility fracture, but both of these conditions are silent: they only cause pain once a bone has broken.
Fragility fractures are never normal, and many can be prevented with safe and effective treatments. Many people are at risk of fragility fractures but don’t know this until they break a bone.
Fracture risk is easy to assess and reduce but only 1 in 3 people in the UK get the correct treatment after a fragility fracture. After 1 year, only 1 in 10 people will be taking effective medicines to prevent more broken bones.
