What is Arthrosamid?
Arthrosamid is an injectable implant that aims to deliver long lasting pain relief to delay the need for a knee replacement. The treatment may decrease joint stiffness caused by knee osteoarthritis, reduce pain and improve function of the knee.
Why choose an Arthrosamid injection?
Knee osteoarthritis is a long term condition causing the joint to become stiff, swollen and painful. Over time, the joint worsens. Compared to steroid injections, Arthrosamid may provide longer lasting relief. Artrhrosamid is administered via a simple procedure under local anaesthetic. The procedure is carried out onsite at Candover Clinic.
The recovery period following treatment is significantly less compared to surgical intervention. Patients should rest, followed by normal day to day activities for the first two days. No strenuous weight-bearing activities should be carried out for the first 2 weeks after the injection.
How is Arthrosamid administered?
- You will have a local anaesthetic to the knee to numb the area
- Using ultrasound guided injection, the Arthrosamid is injected in to the knee cavity
How does Arthrosamid work?
- Arthosamid is positioned within the tissue lining of the knee joint. It softens and increases the elasticity of the tissue
- This unique characteristic may provide a significant reduction in osteoarthritis pain
How long does the treatment last?
- Patient feedback shows patients may start to see the benefit from the treatment from around 8 weeks following the treatment
- Pain levels and function may improve for up to 6 months following this and can last multiple years
Are there any side effects?
- The most common side effect reported is mild to moderate pain around the injection site, and swelling during the first weeks to months following the injection
- A rare side effect is infection at the injection site

Arthrosamid injections are not available under private medical insurance and are only available to self-pay patients.
