Ophthalmology is the study of the anatomy, physiology and diseases of the eye. It deals with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of diseases of the eye. It involves the care of eye conditions in patients of all ages covering a wide range of conditions; trauma, cataracts, diabetic eye disease, congenital and genetic eye problems.
An ageing population means there are increasingly more incidences of age-related diseases of the eye, such as age related macular degeneration.
Cataracts are the main cause of impaired vision worldwide. Cataract surgery is the second most common operation performed in the NHS in England.
The ophthalmology department at Candover provides a general ophthalmology service with specialisation of some common conditions. Rarer conditions can be assessed here. All procedures including cataract surgery take place in the Eye Day Care Unit of Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital.

Strabismus
Strabismus (also known as a squint) is the term used to describe any ocular misalignment. This can be the eyes turning inwards, outwards, one going up or down. This can cause double vision (diplopia) but in children will often lead to reduced vision in one eye (known as amblyopia). Management of strabismus is both for functional visual improvement and restoring a ‘normal’ position of the eyes.
For adults we can provide a full eye movement and ocular assessment for anyone with strabismus whether this is long-standing and has been present from childhood or of more recent onset. In both instances we are able to perform any necessary investigations to look for causes of the misalignment and provide advice and treatments which may include prisms, exercises or surgery.
