Menopause refers to your periods stopping due to a change in hormone levels. Perimenopause is referred to when you have symptoms of menopause but your periods have not stopped. Menopause can happen naturally and spontaneously or it can happen due to treatments such as radiotherapy, chemotherapy or by a surgical procedure such  as removal of the ovaries or the uterus. The average age of menopause is between 45 and 55 years.

Symptoms of menopause can include:


  • vaginal dryness, soreness, itching
  • urinary symptoms such as recurrent bladder infections, incontinence
  • depressive symptoms, anxiety, low mood, mood swings, anger
  • low libido
  • sleep problems/night sweats
  • fatigue and lack of energy

Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) has been shown to be a safe and effective treatment for these symptoms.  An individual assessment can help identify the problems and underlying cause. Blood tests can be required to confirm a diagnosis, if and when treatment isn’t working and to exclude other conditions.
