Pathology
The trust’s pathology department examines blood, tissue and other body fluids to diagnose illnesses or to check that all is well. Approximately 70% of all clinical decisions are based on results from the pathology department. Traditionally pathology includes 4 major specialties;
- Chemical pathology which looks at chemicals in the blood
- Haematology which looks at the blood itself
- Cellular pathology which looks at tissue and cells
- Microbiology which looks for bacteria, fungi and viruses that can cause infections
Each specialty is led by a consultant, they and their colleagues work closely with biomedical scientists and laboratory assistants to ensure samples are processed accurately and the results sent back to the requesting doctor with appropriate advice as soon as possible. Most samples are processed the same day they arrive, with results also reported the same day. Some specialised tests may take a few days longer.

Cardiology
Exercise stress tests – Candover offers private patients the use of a dedicated treadmill stress test facility. A stress test is used to test for heart disease. Stress tests are tests performed by a doctor and/or trained technician to determine the amount of stress that your heart can manage before developing either an abnormal rhythm or evidence of ischemia (not enough blood flow to the heart muscle).
Echocardiography – Candover provides private patients with the convenience of in-house echocardiograms. An echocardiogram, often referred to as a cardiac echo or simply an echo, is a sonogram of the heart. Echocardiography uses standard two-dimensional, three-dimensional and Doppler ultrasound to create images of the heart.

Ophthalmology
Ophthalmology is the study of the anatomy, physiology and diseases of the eye. It deals with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of diseases of the eye.
Ophthalmology is the study of the anatomy, physiology and diseases of the eye. It deals with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of diseases of the eye. It involves the care of eye conditions in patients of all ages covering a wide range of conditions; trauma, cataracts, diabetic eye disease, congenital and genetic eye problems. An ageing population means there are increasingly more incidences of age-related diseases of the eye, such as age related macular degeneration.
Cataracts are the main cause of impaired vision worldwide. Cataract surgery is the second most common operation performed in the NHS in England. The ophthalmology department provides a general ophthalmology service with specialisation of some common conditions. Rarer conditions can be assessed here.

Urodynamics
Urology is the focus on surgical and medical diseases of the male and female urinary tract system and the male reproductive organs. This includes the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the kidneys, ureters, bladder, prostate and male reproductive organs. Conditions treated include bladder and urinary problems, incontinence, impotence and infertility.
Candover Clinic has access to the urology department at Basingstoke Hospital which has a national reputation for offering the latest minimally invasive treatments for a variety of conditions including prostate cancer, bladder cancer, kidney stones and benign prostatic enlargement.
