The spinal cord is made up of a large amount of nerves, these are an extension of the brain. Messages are carried from our brain to our body via these nerves. These messages enable our body to move, feel pressure and control vital functions like breathing, blood pressure, bladder and bowels. If the spinal cord is damaged, the communication between our brain and the rest of our body is disturbed which will result in a loss of movement and feeling from below the level of injury. Damage to the spinal cord can be caused by a trauma like an accident or as a result of infection or disease.
