Ophthalmology is the study of the anatomy, physiology and diseases of the eye. It deals with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of diseases of the eye. It involves the care of eye conditions in patients of all ages covering a wide range of conditions; trauma, cataracts, diabetic eye disease, congenital and genetic eye problems. An ageing population means there are increasingly more incidences of age-related diseases of the eye, such as age related macular degeneration.

Cataracts are the main cause of impaired vision worldwide. Cataract surgery is the second most common operation performed in the NHS in England. The ophthalmology department provides a general ophthalmology service with specialisation of some common conditions. Rarer conditions can be assessed here.
