Menopause refers to your periods stopping due to a change in hormone levels. Perimenopause is referred to when you have symptoms of menopause but your periods have not stopped. Menopause can happen naturally and spontaneously or it can happen due to treatments such as radiotherapy, chemotherapy or by a surgical procedure such  as removal of the ovaries or the uterus. The average age of menopause is between 45 and 55 years.

Symptoms of menopause can include:

 

  • vaginal dryness, soreness, itching
  • urinary symptoms such as recurrent bladder infections, incontinence
  • depressive symptoms, anxiety, low mood, mood swings, anger
  • low libido
  • sleep problems/night sweats
  • fatigue and lack of energy
  • dry skin, skin crawling sensation
  • headaches
  • muscle and joint aches and pains
  • pain during intercourse
  • memory problems, word finding problems
  • brain fog

Symptoms of menopause can effect on all aspects of life: work, relationships or marriage as well as family life and the general ability to enjoy life. Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) has been shown to be a safe and effective treatment for these symptoms.  An individual assessment can help identify the problems and underlying cause. Blood tests can be required to confirm a diagnosis, if and when treatment isn’t working and to exclude other conditions.
